Joe Sturgeon, with the city of McAlester Utility Maintenance Department, puts up tape to block a portion of Choctaw Avenue near Second Street Wednesday morning. The construction is the result of an agreement with the city of McAlester and a property owner. The city is tapping into an eight-inch water line under Choctaw Avenue to run a six-inch line up to the front of the building that will be used to connect to a fire suppressant system at The Venue. McAlester City Manager Pete Stasiak said the connection will make it possible for the building owners to connect to the line and install infrastructure for a planned fire suppressant system, which will make it possible for the upper floor to be used. It’s the first such fire suppressant line to be placed along Choctaw Avenue with hopes to revitalize the downtown area through utilizing upper floors in many of the buildings.
